In the realm of cars, the Teardrop is touted as “one of the most enduringly beautiful automobiles of all time”. Only one of two cars sport an impeccable all-alloy Modèle New York coachwork. The elegant Talbot-Lago was the brainchild of three Italian visionaries in the late 1930s, who redefined the Parisian automotive scene — Anthony Lago, Joseph Figoni and Luigi Chinetti.

This 85-year-old car, chassis 90107, has been the star of several automotive shows, including the prestigious Concours d’Elegance. Today, it remains a mechanic marvel, exceptional elegance and real personality car — without a doubt, one of the true masterpieces of industrial design with the French school of streamlined styling.

The Talbot-Lago had been repainted in dark red by the heir to Don Lee Cadillac, Thomas Stewart Lee. The car was also taken out to desert flats in east Los Angeles, where it timed at over 117 mph. Then, French car collector Lindley Locke acquired the car in 1956 and painted it white. By the early 1960s, the vintage beauty had retired to its Santa Monica garage, hidden from view for four decades. According to Robb Report, the 90107 was “treated to fastidious restoration work in the early 2000s” and returned to its original finish in blue with grey fenders.

Below the hood is a 4.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with overhead valves and three Zenith-Stromberg carburettors, capable of 140hp at 4,1000 rpm. Additionally, the Teardrop is equipped with a Wilson pre-selector gearbox, four-wheel mechanical brakes, a live rear axle, and a front independent suspension with an upper wishbone.

The Auction

The Talbot-Lago was not the only gem at the auction either. A 1991 Ferrari F40 sold handsomely for US$2.4 million. Meanwhile, the sale of the US$2.5 million 1967 Toyota-Shelby 2000 GT made international headlines and set the world records for the most valuable Toyota sold at auction and the most valuable Japanese car ever purchased at public auction.

German automaker Porsche comprised one-third of all cars sold during the auction. The entirety of all the marque’s lots offered was sold, with the US$2.9 million 1959 Porsche 718 RSK at the lead after a bidding war. A 2005 Porsche Carrera GT proved the current uptick of value and demand for Porsches produced in the 1990s and after by eclipsing the US$2 million record achieved earlier this year.

David Gooding, president and founder of Gooding & Company, said in a statement that the auction house brought some of the world’s most remarkable and most unique automobiles to which the market responded accordingly.

“Our targeted offerings reflected the tastes and interests of our buyers at this moment in time, and also reiterated recent trends in the market, especially with increased demand in rare, desirable, and customised Porsches and competition cars.”

California-based Gooding & Company realised over US$69 million in a day. It marked a milestone as its most successful and profitable Amelia Island Auction to date in 13 years of history. Indeed a spectacle, the firm achieved a 94 per cent sales rate from 93 out of 99 lots sold.

Later this Spring, on 28 March, Gooding & Company will be conducting a two-week, online-only auction with prized automobilia lots. This maps out the brand’s path to 2030 and sets targets to reduce environmental impact “by taking a holistic and socially responsible approach.”

Making History

When founder Ferruccio Lamborghini set forth to create an impeccable sports car, the Lamborghini tradition was born. Owing to the beauty of design and power of the aspirated V12 engine, done by engineer and designer Giotto Bizzarrini, the luxury brand’s super sports cars have distinguished themselves since the first 350 GT model in 1963.

The Miura, produced in 1966 and eventually evolved into the SV in 1971, went beyond boundaries. The V12 was shifted to the center rear part of the car, which promised an improved weight distribution and made the standard production car model the fastest in the world when it launched. The record showed the engine reaching 370 CV of power with a 0-100km acceleration in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 285 km/h.

With the Diablo and Murciélago, the engine had an initial capacity of 6.2 litres that delivered 580 CV and 330 km/h in the Super Veloce LP 670-4 Version. In 2011, the Aventador launched with a spectacular brand-new 6.5-litre V12. The engine could deliver 700 CV, a top speed of 350 km/h and acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds.

The renowned V12 engine, then and now still, brought symphonic music to drivers’ ears. This engineering work of art gives a spellbinding driving sensation with unmatched power and performance.

The Display

A reconstruction of the first Countach, the LP 500 prototype from 1971, will be displayed in its original “Giallo Fly Speciale” shade of yellow. The car was first presented at the Geneva Motor Show and destroyed in a crash test conducted for type approval purposes in 1974. Taking approximately 25,000 hours, the reconstruction work was done for a collector by the Lamborghini Polo Storico team. The manufacturer’s Centro Stile oversaw the outlining of the bodywork and made sure everything matched the original style.

“The Countach reinvented the game for high-performance vehicles. It became an icon of style language which inspires modern Lamborghini vehicles to this day,” said Winkelmann in a statement about the Countach gracing the annual Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este last October.

As for mechanical components, all are either restored components from the era or reconstructions of parts that are no longer available or were made specifically for the car. Pirelli joined in to remake the tires while expert panel beaters shaped and entirely rebuilt the bodywork and chassis by hand.

And behind the Countach stands the body of a Miura P400 SV restored by Polo Storico at the automobile manufacturer’s headquarters in Italy. Its owner, a collector, asked for the car to be restored for conservation purposes and repainted in the original “Arancio Miura” shade of orange.

Established in 2015, Lamborghini Polo Storico is a department dedicated to preserving the historic identity of Automobili Lamborghini. The team certifies and restores all Lamborghini cars produced up to 2001. Polo Storico also supervises the preservation and acquisition of new sources for the brand’s archives — bringing out the prime in all classic Lamborghinis.

In other automobile news, Gooding & Company marked a new milestone with a 94 per cent sales rate at the Amelia Island Auction conducted last month. The 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe became the most expensive French car in existence at a record-breaking US$13.4 million.

Strictly limited to just 100, the production of the superbikes were at Brough Superior’s France factory, initially set to release in the Fall of 2020. Although production was delayed due to the pandemic, it allowed for more time to test the bike and ensure it was able to reach all its goals. The two parties have shared the first video of the motorcycle in action, when dynamic testing was underway, on France’s Circuit Pau-Arnos track.

Brough Superior president Thierry Henriette said in a statement the characteristic whistle of the turbo completes the unique presence of the motorcycle, as per Robb Report. “We are happy to have met our performance targets, with a power output of 183 hp and a dry weight of 408 pounds. AMB 001 is an original track bike that stirs the senses and delivers on performance. . .”

Both brands produced a unique, lightweight and powerful sports bike with exclusive technical features such as a structural carbon fibre body and a chassis configuration with a double wishbone front fork. The AMB 001 was presented in the traditional Aston Martin Racing colours of Stirling Green and Lime Essence with Matte Black wheels, forks and brake assemblies.

The sleek two-wheeler combines one of the more impressive motorcycle designs in recent years with tons of power. It consists of a turbocharged V-twin engine that outputs 183 horsepower, just a hair more than the promised 180 hp.

Marek Reichman, Aston Martin Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, addressed that the luxury manufacturer’s forward momentum for every aspect of the business, in particular Design, is inspiring. The brand may be 106 years old, but that only proves its know-hows and rich heritage.

In the meantime, manufacturers are busy producing new electric cars to comply with the legislation worldwide that favour vehicles with lower CO2 emissions. They’re also electrifying the existing ranges. With that said, let’s take a peek at the best luxurious upcoming EVs in 2021.

Mercedes EQS 2022

The Mercedes-Benz EQS, a part of Mercedes-Benz’s EQ range which consists of electric and hybrid models, is a luxury saloon and is a first of its kind for the brand. There are two types of trims available –EQS 450+ with a 245kW battery and a more powerful EQS 580 4MATIC version with 385kW and reaches 0-60mph (0-96 km) in 4.3s.

Besides being extremely quiet, the EQS is designed to feature superior aerodynamics, and up to 478-mile (770 km) range. The inside of the car looks like a futuristic spaceship with a long dashboard and a large infotainment screen.

Prices start with £80,000 (US$113,617).

Tesla Model S Plaid

One of the most anticipated Tesla S models, S Plaid is a direct competitor to the Porsche Taycan. With a power of a face-melting 1,006bhp and a speed of 0-60mph in barely 1.9s, it is said to feature the quickest acceleration of any production vehicle ever.

With an estimate range of 396-miles (637 km) delivered by an all-new three-motor electric powertrain, the S Plaid can tackle city driving as well as longer weekend road trips. The S Plaid trim also features upgrades over the S model including new alloy wheels and a few exterior details, such as an added ducktail spoiler and improved space on board.

The price for Model S Plaid starts from £129,990 (US$184,550).

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Mach-E is a more affordable option with prices starting from £41,330 (US$58,404). It is the first electric SUV from Ford and is touted to have a range of up to 379-miles (609 km) and 0-62 mph in only 3.7s. It is available in two battery options either as an all-wheel or a rear-wheel drive.

As you’d expect, it’s equipped with all the modern car essentials – from intelligent parking systems and connectivity including cloud technology and FordPass app that allows remote locking, provides vehicle health alerts and much more.

2022 Lotus Evija

Evija is a fully-electric British hypercar and isn’t even street-legal in the USA and is also produced in extremely-limited numbers. Its power is the highest of all the EVs on the list, with a crazy 2000hp and is claimed by Lotus to be the most powerful car worldwide with a price starting from £2 million (US$2.8 million).

The exterior of this car is truly stunning with butterfly doors and racecar-like form, as well as sculpted outsides for improved aerodynamics. Inside is no less impressive, with an infotainment system using advanced gaming software and lightweight materials throughout the cabin.

2022 Kia EV6

Electric SUV, Kia EV6 is the newest addition to its electric galore. The range is pretty good with up to 316 miles without charging and 0-60mph in 3.5s.

With an all-electric powertrain and seats made from recycled PET plastic bottles, EV6 is a superb choice if you want an eco-friendly car without compromising on the design.

Additionally, it can tow up to 1600kg, so it’s fantastic for that family trips out during the summer.

Price start from £40,895 (US$58,082) for a default trim, while GT-line costs a bit more with the starting price of £43,895 (US$62,342). Deliveries in the UK start in October 2021 and will arrive in Singapore in 2022.
